Lorraine Stacker

Lorraine Stacker is a local and family historian who specializes in Kempsey and Penrith local and family history. She is the former Library Research Services Supervisor at Penrith City Library. She had been a member of staff for 33 years. Lorraine managed the Library’s and Council’s specialist historical collections and archives.

Lorraine has a BA from the University of New England, which she completed in 1995. She then went on to do a Master of Letters, which she completed in 1998. Her thesis was on tenant farming on the Verge Estate of Austral Eden at Kempsey, which is close by to where she grew up within a farming community.

Lorraine’s passion for history has taken her down many paths, two of which were the idea for the annual historical calendar, and history conferences hosted by Penrith City Library. She has also been curator of a number of local historical exhibitions hosted by Penrith City Library.

She is the author of many articles and works on local and family history.

Under the auspices of Nepean Family History Society Lorraine has had a number of publications produced, the last being Emu Plains Cemetery: short stories of its residents.

Lorraine was seconded by Penrith Council to complete a comprehensive history of the City. She was also responsible for Treasures of Penrith’s Past for the City’s Bicentenary in 2015, and the series of Our Fallen booklets commemorating local soldiers from World War One.

Chained to the Soil on the Plains of Emu: A History of the Emu Plains Government Agricultural Establishment 1819-1832

219 pages, index, comprehensive list of convict names. First published in 2000, revised 2019.

The Emu Plains Government Agricultural Establishment operated from 11 September 1819 until 31 August 1832. Established by Lachlan Macquarie, this convict farm holds an important place, not only locally but, in the wider context of Australian colonial history.

The book has been written chronologically tracing the daily activities of the men on the farm from superintendent to labourer. It has been substantially researched from original records and includes biographical information of 45 men, as well as a list of over 1800 men and women who spent time at the farm as superintendents, clerks, overseers, labourers, watchmen, etc. The author has also identified important issues in convict history, such as the status of convict women, the idiot and lunatic convicts stationed there, and the impact of the military on convict life.
